Police have arrested a law student for allegedly injuring a businessman while exercising at his home in Basavanagudi in the southern part of the city.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Afzal, a resident of Basavanagudi. The police seized three air rifles from him, which he allegedly bought for shooting practice at sporting events.
The incident took place on December 10 around 8 pm when the victim, Rajagopal D., who runs a restobar in south Bengaluru, was walking with a relative near KR Park.
According to the FIR, the victim heard a loud sound and then received a blow in the neck. He later filed a complaint that he was shot with an air rifle.
A senior police officer overseeing the investigation told The Hindu that the probe was challenging due to the size of the bullets, prompting investigators to take a two-tiered approach.
“We have formed a team to identify shops selling air rifles in the city and examine the details of people who have bought such weapons in the locality. At the same time, we have conducted ballistic tests to determine the distance and direction from where the bullet came from,” said the officer.
The results of the ballistic tests indicated the possible points of origin of the bullet, after which the accused was traced after questioning several persons.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Afzal was engaged in shooting for the last one year as he wanted to pursue shooting sports.
“He claims that he was practicing at home and that he missed the target once, which led to the accident. However, we are verifying his statement,” the police officer added. Police have not yet identified the specific air weapon that was allegedly used in the incident.
The Basavanagudi police filed an FIR against Afzal under Section 125 of the BNS (act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
