Nobel Laureates in the US Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee will soon join the University of Zurich in Switzerland, where they plan to set up a new center for economics, the university announced on Friday.
The University of Zurich (UZH) said that a couple, currently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will join her Faculty of Economics from July next year.

The announcement did not specify the reasons for their decision to leave MIT. Duflo and Banerjee, along with Michael Kremer, received the Nobel Prize for Economics 2019 for their “experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.
However, they will move to Switzerland at a time when experts warn the cuts of US President Donald Trump to research funding and attacks on academic freedoms at universities that could lead to brain outfit, while some countries seek to attract us scientists.
Duflo, dual American French national, signed the editorial office in Le Monde in March and condemned “unprecedented attacks” on American science.
“She and Indian-Balerjee will have gifted professorship in the UZH funded Lemann Foundation,” the university said.
It will also set up and co -instantly design the new Lemann Center for Development, Education and Public Policy, with the aim of supporting research related to policy and linking researchers and creators of education around the world.

“We are pleased that the two of the most influential economists in the world join UZH,” said University President Michael Schaepman.
Duflo said that the new LEMANN Center will allow couples to keep a part -time position on MIT to “build and expand our work that spans academic research, mentoring of students and the impact of policy in the real world”.
This year’s Nobel Prize in Economics will be announced on Monday.
