This year’s festival season – Dussehra and Deepavali – has seen a jump in sales for garment manufacturers in Tiruppur.
Compared to the last festival season, there has been a nearly 20% increase in sales, said S. Balachandar, vice-president of the Hosiery Manufacturers Association of South India. Almost 60% of the garments produced in Tiruppur for the domestic market are inner garments. The rest is outerwear and almost 40% of these garments are now made of synthetic fabrics.
“We are able to source printed cotton fabric from western states. Now they have shops and offices in Tiruppur and the price of the fabric is ₹ 20 per kg less than what is knitted and printed in Tiruppur. Though labor and energy costs are high in Tiruppur, the demand is growing and the trend is expected to continue during the festival season,” he said.
Among the outerwear, there is a huge shift in trend where young people prefer different types of wear for cinema, restaurants, night wear etc. As more manufacturers in Tiruppur are switching to synthetic fiber garments, there is a demand for these garments as well.
“In the last two months, several big retail brands have been inquiring in Tiruppur for suppliers as they are moving out of Bangladesh. If manufacturers are able to supply at competitive prices, production will increase tremendously,” he said.
