A “big” fire broke out on Friday evening in an apartment in Denver, USA. The Denver Fire Department said in a post on X that one firefighter was injured.
More than 100 firefighters battled a large fire Friday that tore through a three-story apartment complex under construction in southeast Denver, officials told The Associated Press.
A three-alarm fire in Leetsdale and Forest was later upgraded to a “five-alarm fire”, the fire service (IST) said on Saturday.
It added: “One firefighter injury was reported. The firefighter was transported to Denver.”
‘That’s the main thing’
Robert Murphy, director of operations for the Denver Fire Division, told the AP that firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze more than two hours after it broke out.
Several photos shared by the Denver Fire Department showed the building engulfed in flames and thick plumes of smoke rising from it.
“It’s important,” he said. “I can’t tell you the last time we had a three-alarm fire this big in Denver,” he said.
The building is located next to a major thoroughfare, which Denver police said in a post on social media platform X was temporarily closed in both directions.
Some residents of a nearby apartment building were advised to leave because of the heat radiating from the fire, Murphy said.
The Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said in a post on X that the fire caused “significant power outages.” Officials opened a makeshift shelter at an event center in the nearby city of Glendale.
