Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday said that shops in the newly built Mandya market would be allotted to those who have been doing business there for many years and said there should be no confusion in this regard.
After inaugurating the newly constructed Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar Market at Pete Beedi, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that he became the Union Minister with the blessings of the people of Mandya region. “I have been in constant touch with the district administration and directed the officials to identify suitable land for setting up the industry,” he said.
The Minister said that lack of land availability has hindered industrial growth in Mandya and it is the responsibility of the state government to provide the necessary infrastructure.
Mr. Kumaraswamy said that there are about 47 major industries under the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries, but only Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is operating profitably.
Pointing out that cities like Pune and Mumbai are witnessing rapid industrial growth, he said the government is ready to create employment opportunities in such cities, but the youth of Mandya want jobs locally. This is one of the main reasons for rising unemployment in the district, he informed.
The Visvesvaraya iron and steel factory established during the era of the Mysore maharajas at Bhadravati is now defunct but will be revived in the next three to four months, creating about 8,000 to 10,000 jobs, Mr. Kumaraswamy said.
MLA for Mandya Ravikumar said the new market was built with ₹10 crore allocated by the Union and local bodies. The stores will be distributed fairly as per the previous list during the next 15 days, the MLA added.
Mandya Municipal Council President MV Prakash recalled that the market was originally designed by Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar in 1951 and inaugurated in 1960 by the then Chief Minister BD Jatti.
