On Sunday, October 26, a brawl broke out between Barcelona and Real Madrid stars in El Clasico as the final whistle blew in El Clasico. Real Madrid players Vinicius Jr. and Dani Carvajal confronted the Barcelona youngster, forcing both teams to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating.
Yamal, who has been a central figure throughout the El Clasico weekend, was seen in a heated argument with Vinicius, who was clearly eager to take on the Barcelona star. The enraged Real Madrid forward had to be restrained by support staff and dragged away from what could have turned into a serious incident on the pitch.
Apart from Vinicius, Dani Carvajal also joined in the war of words with Yamal. The veteran defender pointed at the Barcelona youngster and suggested that he concentrate on his game instead of talking.
The controversy stemmed from Lamine Yamal’s provocative comments about Real Madrid’s alleged cheating in LaLiga.
“Yes, they’re stealing, complaining, doing things I don’t even know about,” Yamal said during a Twitch chat with Gerard Pique on the Kings League channel during the build-up to the game.
Real Madrid supporters were in no mood to forgive Yamal, taunting and booing him for most of the match.
Yamal got off to a nervous start and the home crowd thought he had converted a penalty when he tackled Vinicius Jr. However, the decision to award the free kick was overturned after a VAR review.
He drew a chorus of boos and jeers every time he touched the ball, prompting one of the loudest reactions of the night as Vinicius smashed a loose ball that bounced away from him.
Struggling to shake off his nerves, Yamal engaged in some neat exchanges with his Barcelona team-mates and even attempted one of his signature curling strikes from the right edge of the box.
However, left-back Alvaro Carreras kept him largely in check after that and Yamal became increasingly peripheral as the game progressed, with Real Madrid asserting their dominance.
Barcelona assistant coach Marcus Sorg admitted the hostile atmosphere probably affected the young star.
“It’s possible. Maybe a little bit. Because he’s learning to deal with the crowd, the boos… It’s a process. It’s true that he’s usually very motivated and today wasn’t very easy for him,” said Sorg.
Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of the LaLiga table to five points by beating Barcelona 2-1 in the first El Clasico of the season. Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham were enough for Los Blancos to win at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday 26 October.
