Lalremsiami (Image credit: Hockey India) RANCHI: Indian women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami is set to become the first athlete from Mizoram to receive the Arjuna award, according to sources. The award is expected to be announced in the coming days.Popularly known as ‘Siami’, she made her senior debut in 2017 during the Test series against Belarus. Since then, she has played 177 international matches and scored 67 goals.

A major milestone in her career came at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where India reached the semi-finals under coach Sjoerd Marijn. Siami’s father wanted to see her play in the Olympics, but he died in 2019 while she was playing in the finals of the Hiroshima hockey series. She continued to compete in the tournament and later made history in Tokyo, becoming the first female athlete from Mizoram to compete in the Games.She also represented India at two Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze in Birmingham. She was part of teams that won silver and bronze at the Asian Games and participated in two World Cups. Although she played more than impressively for the senior team, her accolades as a junior are also worth mentioning. She won silver at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in 2018 and was awarded the FIH Rising Star of the year 2019. But none of this would have been possible without one such Miss Btei who coached her at the SAI Hockey Center in Thenzawl, Mizoram. Later she also trained at the National Hockey Academy in New Delhi.And these days, whenever he is not playing or training in Bengaluru, he tries his best to give back to the community by coaching kids in Mizoram. She is currently playing for the Shrachi Bengal Tigers in the Indian Women’s Hockey League and aims to lead the team to the top. But her primary focus is on the national stage, where her biggest goal is to help the Indian team win the qualifiers in March and secure a place at the World Cup.
