A first-of-its-kind modern glass-enclosed public toilet will be inaugurated at the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens on Tuesday. Built by the Brickwork Foundation as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility funds, the toilet was designed to offer visitors a safe, hygienic and universally accessible experience.

The modern toilet has a reflective glass facade, natural skylights, sufficient ventilation and camera surveillance at the entrance. There are also ramps and specialized toilets for the disabled and the elderly.

They also installed a private baby room and changing station in the women’s section, while the men’s section also has changing facilities. A child-friendly hand washing station has been installed.

Entry to the toilet would be managed through a QR code based payment and usage system, with each person expected to pay ₹6 to support maintenance and cleanliness. The Brickwork Foundation would directly manage the facility to ensure a high standard of cleanliness, said a statement issued by the Department of Horticulture.

“Lalbagh receives around 5,000 visitors on weekdays, nearly 10,000 on weekends and over 40,000 during flower shows. As earlier only seven public toilets were available in the garden, the new facility fills a big gap with modern facilities similar to developed countries,” said Ibrahim Maigur, director of horticulture.

Additional director of horticulture M. Jagadeesh said the toilet has been strategically located near the old accounts office, which is being converted into a museum and is expected to witness increased footfall.
