Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Sunday (May 17, 2026) announced a major wage rationalization reform for daily wagers, part-time employees, seasonal employees and employees working in the Union Territory.
Ending a “landmark reform in Ladakh to ensure decent wages to marginalized wage workers,” Mr. Saxena said, “I have ordered a major rationalization of wages for daily wagers, part-timers/need-based workers like sweepers, cleaners, gardeners, etc., who have been working for wages ranging from ₹300 to ₹500 per month for various years”.
As per the new pay matrix, skilled workers will now be paid ₹575 per day while unskilled workers will earn ₹450 per day. The LG administration has ordered a comprehensive vetting of all such workers and a revision of their wages within 20 days.
“I believe that such an abysmal wage violated the principles of social justice. We are committed to ensuring fair and decent wages for all wage earners under the ‘Minimum Wages Act’ while recognizing their immense contribution in providing vital public services across Ladakh,” Saxena said.
Both local residents and migrant workers are expected to benefit from the revised policy.
The lieutenant governor also directed departments to complete verification of contract records, job details, working hours and Aadhaar-linked bank account information within 20 days.
“All payments will be made through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly to the employees’ bank accounts to ensure transparency and accountability,” officials said.
