Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar sternly warned labor inspectors that action would be taken against them if they fail to identify child laborers and effectively prevent such practices.

In a review meeting here on Friday, Mr. Bhoyar expressed dissatisfaction over the lower number of child labor cases registered and penalties imposed. Officials brought to his notice that 3,919 surprise raids were conducted and 102 child laborers were rescued and a fine of ₹4.59 crore was imposed in the last three years.

The deputy commissioner further said that the labor inspectors and project directors of all the three taluks are not performing their duties adequately and responsibly. According to him, the performance of the non-governmental organization was not satisfactory either.

For this a notice would be issued to the inspectors and a report submitted to the Labor Commissioner.

Mr. Bhoyar took labor officials to task for their failure to supervise the operation against child laborers and directed them to submit a daily and weekly progress report.

He told the officials to strictly follow the rules and guidelines under the Child Labor Act, 1986. Mr. Bhoyar said that a progress report should be submitted under the Pan India Rescue and Rehabilitation Campaign for Child and Adolescent Workers.

“Parents of minor children and land owners should be held responsible if they involve children in field work,” he added.

According to him, labor inspectors should submit a report on the deposit of funds for rehabilitation to the district fund and the youth rehabilitation fund.

Mr. Bhoyar said the inspectors should hold meetings of the task force committees at the taluk level every month and submit a report on the progress of the meetings to the officials of the labor department.

Labor MP Srihari Deshpande, Project Director Riyaz Patel and other officials were present.
