
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to bring an action against Trump’s administration of what he calls the “unlawful” deployment of National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles.
“This is a serious violation of state sovereignty – ignition of tension and at the same time pulling out sources from where they are really needed,” Newsom said in a post on x. “Cancel your order. Return check to California.”
In a formal letter of Defense Minister Pete HegSeth, Newsom demanded an immediate return of soldiers and claimed that local enforcement of law had sufficient sources to maintain order.
“Currently, the coercive bodies from the city and the Los Angeles Region protect public security,” he read the letter, quoting a robust response to protests on Saturday evening.
Newsom: “Trump has never mentioned units”
Newsom also accused President Trump of imposing him during his recent phone call. “Trump never mentioned the National Guard when we spoke on Friday,” said Governor on Sunday evening.
“It was a very civic interview. I always wanted to approach the President of the United States with the President of the United States.
“We had no problem until Trump was involved. This is a serious violation of state sovereignty – ignition of tension and pulling resources from a place where they are really needed,” Newsom wrote Na X.
White House’s plans for the greater presence of soldiers
President Trump allowed the deployment of 2,000 National Guard soldiers on Saturday, although only 300 came to LA on Sunday. The rest is reportedly in standby and is waiting for further instructions.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon confirmed that 500 marines based in Camp Pendleton are also “ready to deploy” at the status if violence continues.
LAPD boss: “We are amazed”
LAPD chief Jim McDonnell admitted on Sunday that his officers were trying to limit the situation.
“We are amazed,” McDonnell said during the press briefing. “Tonight we had individuals who shot commercial fireworks on our officers. It can kill you.”
He described the level of violence as “disgusting” and said that protests are becoming “increasingly and violent”.

Sunday meant the third consecutive day of the unrest, with at least 2,000 struts blocked 101 highways, throwing concrete blocks, and lit vehicles without a driver.
At least three LAPD officers were injured and arrested 27 people. Two protesters reportedly thrust motorcycles into the police lines.
The officers responded with rubber bullets, tear gas and pellets, which also hit journalists on the scene.
