Several Espanyol supporters were injured on Thursday after being hit by a car near the RCDE stadium minutes before the start of the Catalan derby against Barcelona in Lal.
At least 14 individuals suffered injuries of different severity when the driver, surrounded by Espanyol fans before their home country, lost control of her car and caused panic and chaos.
The woman was subsequently arrested by Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force and subjected to a breathing analysis test.
The emergency medical service immediately responded and deployed 10 ambulances on the scene. Of the 14 injured fans, four are reportedly in a less serious condition while others have suffered minor injuries. The most serious injury was a broken leg.
According to the authorities, the incident occurred when Espanyol fans gathered to welcome the team coach. The driver of the driver was wedged between two containers, which caused several supporters to throw objects into the vehicle, resulting in further damage. In response, the driver accelerated and hit around twenty fans.
“It was an accident, some people were injured, but not seriously. There are no big incidents that could report,” said Salvador Illa, President of Generalitat, who was present at the match, the Spanish television channel Movistar Plus.
