In a Significant Boost to India’s Prospects of Securing Its First-emerge Medal In Archery, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday, 9 April, Annced the Inclusion of an Additional event in the Archery Program at the Los Angeles Olympics Feature and Compound Mixed Team Medal Event, In Addition to The Five Recurve Events: Men’s Individual, Women’s Individual, Men’s Team, Women’s Team, and Mixed Team.
For the first time since the re -introduction of archery at the 1972 Olympic Games in 1972, a new Bow discipline was added to the Quadrennial Adquacle sport. The archery returned to the Olympics with two individual recurrent events, while team competitions were introduced in 1988. The fifth medal – Recurve Mixed Team – debuted at Tokyo 2020.
The world’s archery, the management body of the sport, previously submitted a proposal to include compound archery in games, but was originally rejected in October 2023.
In particular, international events are treated as well as re -folded archery and offer the same number of medals and wins, including the World Archery Championship and at the perimeter of the World Lukrice Cup.
At the Asian Games 2023, Compund Archery presented the full slate of five events for the first time, which corresponded to the Recurve program in the range.
India dominated the compound archery event in Hangzhou and won all five gold medals. Ojas Pravin Deotale and Jyothi Arekha Vennam claimed gold in individual events of men and women, while India also won the male team, female team and mixed team categories.
“This is a monumental step forward for sport and for millions of folded archers around the world who have long been looking for the Olympic recognition,” Dr. Ugur Erdener.
“My deep gratitude belongs to the International Olympic Committee, especially President IOC Thomas Bach for his great interest in this important project, and the La28 organizational committee for their support throughout the process.”
Indian dominance in folded archery
At the Compound Mixed Team event, India is currently second in the world for the United States. India also holds instead of No. 1 in the women’s female women’s ranking and is placed second behind Turkey in the ranking of individual women.
Jyothi Arekha Vennam is fourth in the world in the individual category of women. Jyothi enjoyed a historical campaign at the Asian Games 2023 In Hangzhou, winning gold medals in an individual combination of women, women’s team and mixed team events – rare heights.
He will be one of the athletes who will look at the Los Angeles 2028. Jyothi won eight medals of the Lukrice World Championship, including the first world title of India in folded archery. She also boasts 20 medals at the World Championship, 10 of them gold.
In April 2023, at the first stage of the archery in Antalya, Turkey, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale secured the gold medal in the action of the mixed team. They defeated the Chinese couple Taipei with an almost perfect score of 159-154, which just disappeared the world record by just one point. This victory identified the Indian second gold of the World Championship in the mixed team category, after the first victory of Jyothi and Abhishek Verma in Paris in 2022.
What is compound archery and how does it differ from repetition?
Folded archery uses bows equipped with pullery and cable system and offers a mechanical advantage that reduces the weight of holding at full draw. This allows archers to focus with greater stability and shoot arrows at higher speeds. On the other hand, archery repeats traditional bows with limbs that curl outwards at the ends, requires that the archer manually draws and holds full weight and requires greater physical strength.
