KWA is considering projects to address water scarcity in West Kochi

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has proposed a number of projects to address water scarcity in the West Kochi region. These include laying new pipes, replacing aging asbestos pipes with cast iron pipes and increasing the frequency of water pumping. Kumbalangi, Mattancherry and Chellanam are among the areas expected to benefit.

According to a KWA source, a major pipeline diversion project is under consideration along the Pandikudi-Chellanam road. “The 10km stretch has a distribution network of old asbestos pipes. Several pipes pass through private land and even under buildings. There are also hidden leaks. Addressing these issues will improve water availability in Chellanam,” the source said.

KWA has been considering the project for some time, but funding remains an issue as it is expected to cost ₹35-40 crore, including road rehabilitation.

In Kumbalangi, the projects under consideration include the renovation of the upper reservoir at the Kumbalangi filling station and the renovation and re-routing of parts of the distribution network.

The source added that Mattancherry will benefit from the setting up of a 190-MLD water treatment plant at Aluva and an Asian Development Bank-funded drinking water supply optimization project being implemented by a French private firm.

According to KWA sources, the areas within the Kochi Corporation limits require 50 million liters of drinking water per day but are currently getting only 36.5 million litres. Similarly, Kumbalangi panchayat requires 8 lakh liters per day but receives only 5 lakh litres.

“These issues can only be addressed when the 190-MLD plant becomes a reality. Improving the distribution network, replacing old pipelines and repairing leaks will help prevent water loss. Once the plant is commissioned, these areas will have surplus water,” a KWA source said.
