Archdiocesan Archbishop Changanassery Mar Thomas Tharyil said it is difficult to understand how governments can remain indifferent to the problems of people in Kuttanad, who suffer daily because of hydrohyses that have not been four months and the resulting crisis in agriculture.
He spoke while inaugurating Kuttanad Solidarity Dharna organized under the auspices of the Catholic Congress of All Keral with the support of various Archdiocese organizations in Kuttanad on Sunday (August 17, 2025).
“In Kuttanad, the region of the immense potential that the UN even pointed out, people are pushed back in terms of development due to apathy. Urgent steps should not be to solve problems that people face Kuttanad,” said Archbishop Tharyil.
The Archbishop said that the lack of subsequent measures in the Swaminathan Commission report submitted in 2007, as well as in the 2019 expert committee, which led to the creation of the Kuttanad Monitoring Committee, remains a source of pain for Kuttanad and forces people to reach the streets.
