Kurnool to clean old waste using ISWM, Waste-to-Energy plants
Environmental damage caused by wastes can be reduced to a large extent by scientific solid waste management through integrated solid waste management (ISWM) and waste-to-energy facilities, Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman Kommareddy Pattabhiram said.
Mr. Pattabhiram inspected the Gargeyapuram landfill on the outskirts of Kurnool along with Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Challa Obulesu on Tuesday. He inspected the waste-to-energy plant and also the integrated solid waste management plant currently under construction and inquired about their progress. He directed officials and contractors to complete the integrated solid waste management plant by the end of this month and ensure that processing operations start next month.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pattabhiram said that as part of an initiative to keep Kurnool city clean, 10 million tonnes of garbage accumulated over a decade in around 60 acres of Gargeyapuram and Joharapuram dumping grounds is being rehabilitated through bio-mining.
The government has approved construction of Gargeyapuram Landfill Waste Conversion Plant under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a cost of ₹ 330 crore on an area of 15 acres to permanently solve the waste disposal problem and generate electricity from waste.
Under modern waste management, arrangements are being made to build an integrated solid waste management plant on an area of 9.5 acres at a cost of ₹8 crore, Mr. Pattabhiram said. He added that steps would be taken to scientifically process 200 metric tonnes of solid waste per day and convert it into a form suitable for reuse.
Mr. Pattabhiram also emphasized on the need to complete these projects on priority to strengthen the solid waste management system in Kurnool city. He directed officials and contractors to speed up the work without delay while strictly maintaining quality standards during construction.
KMC Commissioner Challa Obulesu said that Kurnool will have long-term benefits from remediation of old waste accumulated in landfills and implementation of modern waste management projects. He mentioned that all necessary measures are being taken to transform the city into a clean and eco-friendly urban center.
