The Communist Party of India (Marxist) -Panchayat in Kerala has decided to approach the state government asking for a change in the decade of the old name of the village intersection after a recent conflict in India-Pakistan.
Kunnathoor Gram Panchayat unanimously agreed to hand over the proposal to rename “Pakistan Mukka” after the formal request of a member of the BJP department at a recent meeting.
According to President Panchayat Valsal Kumari K. Panchayat has no power to rename the places and therefore decided to hand over the application to the government.
“Panchayat received a letter about it, so he discussed the matter. No one raised any objection to the application during the discussion. So we decided to record opinions and submit to the government,” she said.
During the discussion, some members proposed to rename the intersection as “Ivarkala”. The President said that the intersection has been known for several decades as “Pakistan Muk”.
“But in our records Panchayat is not mentioned in this particular name. However, the location is named among the locals as Pakistan Mukka,” she said.
“The final decision is on the government. We have no provision in the Panchayati Raj rules to change the name of any place,” she said.
Mrs. Valsala Kumari said the area was home to people of all religions, castes and communities who live in harmony.
“I wish the new development and a lot of discussion would not disturb contemporary harmony and coexistence,” she added.
