The main project of reconstruction 99-Crore, which would provide a complete transformation to the Kumbakonam railway station in the coming months.

The project was designed by the Ministry of Railways, after which the South Railway appointed a consultant for the preparation of the main plan. The Kumbakonam railway station was opened to the personal service of 15 February 1877 during the colonial era, when there was a former South Indian railway. The station is classified as NSG 4 (not suburban) attracting tourists from all over the country.
As part of the reconstruction project, the existing railway station would be demolished and a new world -class station will be built.

Mahamaham
The clerk said the plan was to complete the job for one and a half years from the date of work. The court reconstruction would be accepted separately. “The formalities should be completed early and the whole project should be completed well before the next Mahamaham festival, which is to be held in Kumbakonami on March 9, 2028,” said A. Giri, secretary of the Thanjavur District Railway Association.
The station with modern devices should be ready to use a huge piece of pilgrims visiting Kumbakonam for a monthly event, said Mr. Giri, a former member of the Division Railways Advisory Committee.
