KTR praises Foxconn facility, says MoU inked during BRS regime that brought thousands of jobs
Taiwanese giant and Apple supplier Foxconn’s factory near Hyderabad has been in the limelight after BRS leader KTRma Rao posted on social media about how the facility, for which an MoU was signed when the party was in power, is operational and employing thousands of people.
“My heart is full of pride and joy to see this Foxconn investment taking shape,” the former IT and Industry minister said, posting visuals of the AirPods manufacturing plant in Kongara Kalan not far away. Three years after the MoU was signed in the presence of then Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, the factory is up and running and employing thousands of people.
There was no reaction from senior officials of the ruling Congress to the post on X, which comes on the heels of his visit to the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) hospital in Sanathnagar. In a post after the visit, he said that the hospital is one of three that the BRS government has started to build. “I am happy to visit Sanathnagar TIMS hospital today where world class medical services for poor and middle class families have finally started despite the delay caused by Congress government’s negligence,” he wrote on May 15.
At the Foxconn facility, government sources said Foxconn Interconnect Technology operates a factory and manufactures wireless headphones for domestic use as well as for global export.
While $500 million (approximately ₹4,100 million) was the initial investment when the project broke ground in May 2023, it has since been increased to ₹5,000 million. Foxconn raised its target investment to $550 million (approximately ₹4,800 million).
Over ₹3,000 crore has been invested in the facility, which includes 1.6 million square feet of manufacturing space, a trial phase and relocation of high-end production lines from Vietnamese plants to ramp up production of AirPods. The remaining investments will be made over a multi-year cycle to further strengthen capacities.
After Congress came to power, another memorandum of understanding was signed under which the government committed to certain incentives and reimbursements based on investment in the project. Employment figures have also increased by 3,000 to 5,000 under the current regime, sources said.
In October 2024, Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy and Industries and IT Minister D.Sridhar Babu reviewed the progress of the facility and provided necessary support. Officials then indicated a formal inauguration of the plant by 2024.
