KSTA organizes protest against transfer of leaders
The Kerala Administrative Court (KAT) stayed the transfer order of two higher secondary school teachers to Kasaragod for a period of one month. This follows a petition by teachers who are leaders of the Kerala School Teachers’ Association (KSTA) seeking a stay on the implementation of the transfer orders. The petitioners demanded that they be allowed to continue in the schools in Wayanad to which they were first transferred.
Earlier in the day, the KSTA staged a protest in front of the directorate of general education in Jagatha here and in various district headquarters against the transfer of its leaders, alleging that the move was done against norms. Protesters burned transfer orders during the agitation. The transfers were intended to settle political scores, the KSTA claimed, demanding that they be revoked.
The organization claimed that its state secretary PJ Binesh and Wayanad district joint secretary Wilson Thomas were transferred to Kasaragod after orders were issued to shift them to Wayanad. Both were on deputation to Samagra Shiksha Kerala and requested to return to their home district. According to a government order issued in 2017, employees should be posted to their home district at the end of their deputation. The then DGE therefore issued orders to transfer them to schools in Wayanad where there were vacancies. However, as they were about to board, they were told that headquarters had issued instructions that they should not be allowed to board.
Five days after their move to Wayanad, these orders were revoked and they were transferred to Kasaragod. Mr. Thomas, the KSTA pointed out, only had one year until retirement. Many court verdicts emphasized that employees with a year of service left should be transferred to their home districts if there are vacancies, KSTA said.
Additionally, the two transfers were conditional and the teachers had to move out once the general online transfer process for upper secondary teachers was done. However, even the temporary transfers were later cancelled, the association claimed. The protest held in front of the headquarters here was started by KSTA Secretary A. Najeeb. Its state secretary PV Rajesh addressed the rally. KSTA District Vice President E. Ismail presided over the function and District Secretary R. Vidyavinod spoke.
