
After the India Meteorological Department issued red and orange alerts for the area for three days on October 27, 28 and 29 in view of the formation of cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ on Monday, District Collector Krishna DK Balaji on Saturday (October 25) asked people to stock up on ready-made food, milk and other essential items.
During a cyclone preparedness meeting at the Collectorate in Machilipatnam, the collector told officials that the district may experience very heavy to extremely heavy rain on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
He asked officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply, especially in hospitals, and mobile signal and asked them to keep cranes and transport trucks ready to remove uprooted trees. He said that the officials of revenue divisions should take measures to avoid any kind of mishaps.
The Collector asked the officials to ensure strengthening of the embankments of the canal. He said boats, life jackets and swimmers should be ready. Fishermen should not venture into the sea.
Medical camps will be set up at the rehabilitation centers and medicines will be prepared, he said, adding that a dispatch center has been set up. People can call 08672 252572 for help. People have been advised to have candles and flashlights ready.
This week’s Public Grievance Redressal Scheme, held every Monday, has been canceled due to the forecast of rain.
Meanwhile, a command control room has been set up in NTR district, which is also likely to be hit by extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, and people in distress can dial 91549 70454 for help.
NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha said that special teams have been formed at the ground level and instructed them to pay special attention to low-lying areas. He asked them to create awareness among the people living in the hills. All those living in areas designated as rockfall risk should be shifted to rehabilitation centers, he said.
The Collector also declared a holiday for all government and private educational institutions on October 27, 28 and 29. He asked the officials to ensure that the students in SC, ST, BC welfare hostels should reach home by Sunday evening.
