Krishna Gana Sabha on Saturday honored senior theater artist, director and writer ‘Appa’ Ramesh, who has over 7,500 performances on stage, with the Nataka Choodamani Award. She also conferred the Iyakkunar Sigaram K. Balachander Award to theater actor and historian Karthik Bhatt with 400 stage performances. The awards were presented during the inauguration of the Sabha’s Summer Theater Fest, which will present nine plays over the weekends until May 24.
Actor and former secretary member, Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram, Sachu, appreciated the fact that amateurs have shone in the firmament of Tamil theatre. “There was a time when plays were turned into movies and actors moved from theater to cinema. I don’t see that happening now. We used to think that amateurs were not serious about acting and theater. But that’s not the case. They’re the ones who stand firm now,” she said.
