KPCC spokesperson seeks retired HC judge probe into Ganeshotsav controversy

Noting that Ganesha immersion processions have become a sensitive social issue and a platform for political confrontation, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson HA Venkatesh has asked for an inquiry into the Ganeshotsava controversies in the state led by a former Supreme Court judge.

An independent inquiry should look into statements by police officers, speeches by political leaders, circumstances surrounding the protests, videos circulated on social media and sources of rumours, Mr Venkatesh said in a statement here on Sunday.

The inquiry should include the various controversies reported across the state, including the T. Narasipur incident, to establish the facts. Those found guilty, irrespective of their identity, should face prosecution in accordance with law, he said, while seeking clear guidelines for Ganeshotsav celebrations.

Referring to the incident, Mr. Venkatesh cited media reports that the police had issued precautionary instructions regarding certain activities, including bursting crackers in front of the mosque. BJP leaders opposed the remarks and staged a protest, turning the issue into a political confrontation, he said.

“Publishing only parts of a police officer’s statement without examining the full context can create misconceptions and fears among people. Political leaders and public representatives should act more responsibly in matters involving religious sentiments,” Venkatesh said.

He said former MP Pratap Simha’s public criticism of the police officer and his speech during the parade could undermine the morale of the police force. He called on the authorities to examine the complete videos of Mr. Simha’s statements and speeches by other leaders, police records and other relevant evidence and present the facts to the public.
