The Kozhikode City Police has launched the ‘Nirbhaya Nisha’ project to improve the safety of women traveling at night as part of International Women’s Day celebrations. The initiative, which was launched on Sunday (March 8, 2026), aims to provide quick police assistance and strengthen security measures for women commuters at late hours.
The state-level project in Kozhikode was inaugurated by writer KP Sudheera at a function organized at the Kozhikode beach. O. Sadasivan, Major; G. Jaidev, District Superintendent of Police (Kozhikode City); S. Shamsudheen, Additional Superintendent of Police; and KJ Johnson, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Anti-Narcotics Cell) were present.
The project, which has been proposed as part of Kerala Police’s state-wide security initiative, aims to improve the safety of women traveling at night for work, education, medical emergencies or other purposes. The program envisages a rapid response mechanism to deal with emergencies faced by women between 9pm and 5am through coordinated policing and use of latest technology.
According to senior police officers, the system will work through the integrated use of multiple emergency response platforms, including the Emergency Response Support System, the national emergency number 112, district police control stations, highway patrol units and Pink Patrol vehicles. The SOS facility available on the police mobile app will also be linked to the response network to facilitate faster assistance.
Along with the launch of the project, the police will increase night patrols, strengthen monitoring through dispatch centers and identify vulnerable areas requiring additional surveillance. Field programs will also be conducted to help women familiarize themselves with the new devices and their quick use in emergency situations, they said.
