The five years of the Kozhikode Corporation Council were marked by underdevelopment and corruption, said K. Surendran, former state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mr. Surendran here on Saturday (Dec 6) released the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) “indictment” against the Corporation, saying that the Deputy Mayor was running the administration of the civic body while the Mayor looked on.
“Due to apathy, the Corporation could not utilize the Central Assistance properly. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) benefited a lot from corruption while the United Democratic Front (UDF) was its silent supporter. The Corporation was against the common people and appeased the rich and the rich,” said Mr. Surendran.
He assured that the schedule of development plans will be made public within 45 days if the NDA is voted to power in the corporation. He alleged that the LDF and UDF have come together in several divisions to defeat the BJP. The UDF is defunct in many divisions. Both fronts are competing with the support of communal elements, he added.
Mr. Surendran said the change of power in the Kozhikode Corporation was beyond doubt. BJP city president KP Prakash Babu, national councilor KP Sreeshan, state cell coordinator VK Sajeevan and state councilor P. Raghunath were present.
The NDA ‘charge’ highlights the corporation’s “inability to utilize funds sanctioned under the AMRUT scheme, traffic congestion in the city and failure to set up promised parking spaces or other parking arrangements that could facilitate traffic”. The “charge” also questions budget allocations, recurring projects and the use of funds.
