Janakidevi N. Yareshemi, Artisan, who specializes in the production of “Koudi” from Ranebennura in the Hraver district, was awarded the State Prize “Kushala Kala” for 2023-24 as a recognition of her contribution to promoting traditional art form.
Mrs. Yareshemi, 77, a native of Sangur in HRAKER TALUK and the wife of late NG Yereshemi, has been producing “Koudis” over the past five decades and also has its own suggestions. After her childhood she learned art from her mother Savitravy and grandmother, it is still sewn. She never went to school, but she managed art and knows what design is best, every time she deals with sewing a new “Koudi”.
‘Koudi’ is a blanket made using torn clothes. Each piece of fabric is carefully stitched by hand and prepare one “koudi” for several days.
Mrs. Yareshemi “Koudis” is strange because of complex designs made in their sewing. Without using any scale or pencil, it issues proposals in its mind from its eyes.
It is not only her art “koudi”, but also her efforts to maintain and promote the artistic form that won her award. Along with her regular initiatives to pass the artistic form of the next generation, she performed a design workshop for Lambani’s craftsmen in Sangur under the auspices of the Ministry of Textile of the Union’s Government, organized NIFT students and performed various “Koudi” workshops.

The ceremony took place in Bengaluru 16 April. She responded to the honor, giving Mrs. Yareshemi the prize to all those who continued to promote the artistic form, her mother and her children, who encouraged her to continue to persecute her passion.
