Fisherwomen of Kottcherry honey, a coastal village in Karaikan, called on the local administration to provide reserved space for drying fish, quoting concern for health, safety and living.
The village, which is home to more than 500 families, relies strongly on fishing on a small scale. While men go to the sea, they are women who take care of drying and marketing catches. In the absence of designed drying, women are forced to spread fish on the sides of the Mandapathur road and in open sand spots in the vicinity – inappropriate and unhygienic.
“We dry fish on the road or directly in the sand. The vehicles are sometimes passing through and dust and wasting from the road will spoil the fish,” said P. Kannachiyamma, the locals.
Yogambal K, another fisherman, said: “Other coastal villages have reserved drying floors, but we were omitted. Women face every day to do basic work for living.”
Fisher Community addressed the Karaikal district to assign a proper drying yard and emphasize that such a device significantly improves their working conditions and income.
