With the aim of creating a nationwide network of public toilets, Mission Suchitwa launched the KLOO mobile app, an innovative platform developed by start-up Frugal Scientific.
KLOO plans to use existing clean and affordable facilities in private facilities such as hotels and restaurants, eliminating the need for new construction.
The app, whose name is a portmanteau of the words ‘Kerala’ and ‘toilet’, connects citizens to the nearest usable toilet and provides real-time information including location, hours of operation and crucial cleanliness ratings from other users. KLOO works by connecting private devices that register their devices. Those registering their facilities should specify key details such as whether toilets are open to all or customers only, hours of operation and accessibility features, including gender accessibility and special facilities such as being suitable for people with different disabilities.
Upon successful verification by the local authority or Suchitwa Mission, the facility will receive a KLOO partner sticker or label confirming their commitment to the Clean Kerala initiative. Continuous user feedback and ratings are key to maintaining high hygiene standards, a statement said here on Thursday.
Businesses benefit
Hotels and restaurants are poised to reap significant business benefits from this platform. The opening of the toilets increases the number of passengers, delivery people and tourists. Many users often make purchases after using the device, which leads to indirect income. By offering clean toilets, KLOO partners become preferred stops for both domestic and international travelers in line with the highly valued vision of ‘Clean Kerala’.
Devices can join the network by registering through the KLOO partner portal or the Suchitwa Mission office. The KLOO app is a smart, inclusive and sustainable sanitation model that uses private infrastructure to meet public needs and demonstrates a forward-looking approach to urban sanitation management in Kerala, the statement said.
