Kolkata Knight Riders’ difficult start to the IPL 2026 season took a turn for the worse on Tuesday when skipper Ajinkya Rahane was fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their 32-run defeat by Chennai Super Kings in a group clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
CSK vs KKR, IPL 2026: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
As it was KKR’s first over-marking offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL code of conduct, Rahane was fined Rs 12 crore. The penalty capped another frustrating night for the three-time champions, who remain winless after five matches in IPL 2026.
A 32-run defeat at Chepauk left Kolkata Knight Riders languishing at the bottom of the points table with just one point underlining a campaign that has struggled to find rhythm in any department. Chasing 192 on a surface that offered help but remained largely good for batting, KKR never quite got going.
The tone was set by a slow power play, when the guests managed only 36:37 runs in the first six overs. The pressure only mounted in the middle overs as the CSK spinners tightened the screws, making the pull game difficult. Finn Allen (1), Sunil Narine (24) and Rinku Singh (6) failed to convert starts, while Rahane himself failed to anchor the chase, scoring 28 off 22 balls.
His dismissal of Noor Ahmed proved decisive and triggered the collapse that effectively ended KKR’s hopes. From there, CSK closed out a comfortable win, climbing up the table and overtaking Mumbai Indians in the standings.
Reflecting on the performance, Rahane admitted that KKR failed to build momentum in the crucial stages of the chase.
“No real momentum with the bat. Initially, with our bat, we got 36 or 37 runs in the over, I thought that was really important. The middle phase of the spinners’ batting was a bit difficult, but other than that the wicket was really good,” Rahane said during a chat with Ravi Shastri.
The KKR skipper also pointed to the absence of a batsman willing to bat deep and control the chase, which he felt was crucial on a surface like Chepauk.
“We needed one at-bats to bat deep and then take it at the end. I think in terms of the combination we had the one we used in the last game and it was really good. I think it’s tough at the moment. Yeah, we’re not winning games, it’s tough. It’s important for all of us to stay positive, keep our heads up, keep our chins up, focus on moving,” he added.
With results that don’t go their way, acknowledged Rahane that the team management may now be forced to rethink their combinations going forward, a sign that KKR could be heading for changes in the coming matches.
“We’ll have to sit in the dressing room, think about the combination. We’ll have to make some changes. Sometimes you support players if the results go your way, then that’s fine. But if the results don’t go your way, you’ll have to think about the combination. But other than that, I thought it was all about being positive and keeping your heads up,” Rahane said.
For KKR, the challenge now is not only tactical but also mental. With five games to go and no wins, the room for error is quickly shrinking and if they don’t find answers quickly, their IPL 2026 campaign risks slipping away before it really gets going.
