Kolkata Knight Riders’ quest for their first win in IPL 2026 could face a major hurdle as rain is likely to spoil their clash with Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens on Monday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a high possibility of the facility being hit by rain, raising fears of a shortened competition or even a complete washout. The weather is adding to the woes of KKR’s early seasonKKR, who are yet to open their account this season, are already under pressure and adverse weather conditions could complicate their campaign further. Their upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants at the same venue is also under the threat of rain, making it a tough phase for the franchise.Interestingly, the corresponding match between KKR and PBKS last season was also marred by rain. Punjab Kings scored 201/4 before KKR made it 7/0, with the two teams eventually sharing a point after the match was abandoned.IMD Forecast signals stormy conditionsThe IMD attributed the unstable weather to a low pressure trough extending from Bihar to Manipur, passing through North Bengal, Assam and Bangladesh. “The state is likely to witness another round of Kalbaishachi storms, with the possibility of hail and thunderstorms from Sunday to Thursday. The intensity and distribution of rains is expected to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday,” the IMD said. “The weather is expected to worsen on Tuesday when Kalbaishakhi storm accompanied by winds of 50-60 kmph, lightning and rain is likely to hit Kolkata and adjoining areas.” Persistent cloud cover and heavy showers have already affected the preparations, the training sessions of both teams on the eve of the match were canceled due to the downpour. The Eden Gardens outfield remained under covers with visible water stains.Limited window for resultWith rain threatening to disrupt the game, the referees will have a narrow window in the game to secure a result. A five-over-a-side minimum game can only be staged if play starts before 10.56pm, with the draw taking place no later than 10.46pm. Such a shortened contest would likely turn into a high-intensity shootout that would heavily favor aggressive batting. However, if it is not possible to play within the specified time frame, the match will be over and both teams will share a point. While Punjab Kings will look to continue their strong start, Kolkata Knight Riders will be desperate for their first win. But with much of the weather forecast, the outcome may ultimately depend on conditions beyond the control of either team.
