Brief Score: Kolkata Knight Riders (25 for 2 in 3.4 overs) Vs. Punjab Kings. Match abandoned due to rain in Kolkata on Monday. EVALUATION | MAIN DATA |
Fortune may favor the brave, but this time it seemed to be on the side of the confusing. When Ajinkya Rahane walked out to the toss under blue Kolkata skies and decided to bat first, he seemed to have ignored both the weather forecast and common sense and instead relied on statistics. As it turned out, he and the Kolkata Knight Riders were spared the consequences of that call as rain forced the washout of the IPL 2026 facility at the Eden Gardens on Monday. The inevitable no-result handed KKR a crucial, gift-wrapped point – much needed for a side desperate to halt the slide after two successive defeats.
Meanwhile, Punjab moved to the top of the table with two wins and a point secured in Kolkata.
Rahane’s decision immediately raised eyebrows. With rain lashing the city on the eve of the match and the pitch under cover ahead of this mundane match, the conditions clearly pointed to bowling first. Unsurprisingly, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer looked delighted with the pitch. While it was true that three of the last six IPL matches at the venue were won by the teams batting first, those numbers were irrelevant under the looming dark clouds. Most captains pay attention to the conditions; Rahane and think tank KKR decided not to.
The Punjab kings wasted no time in making them pay. Their seamers tore through KKR’s top order and reduced them to a shaky 25 for 2 in four overs. As the ball flew through the heavy, humid air, Rahane’s decision quickly began to resemble a self-inflicted blow.
Arshdeep Singh set the tone early, relentlessly probing and drawing restless inside edges from both Finn Allen and Rahane. But it was Australia’s Xavier Bartlett who struck first with a masterclass in outswing bowling. He took advantage of the conditions beautifully to remove Allen – tempted by a drive that went all the way to the keeper – and then Cameron Green, who, already under scrutiny, dropped and pushed to a length that shaped just enough to take the edge.
At that stage, KKR looked in serious trouble, their top order exposed and the momentum firmly with Punjab. Yet, just as the Eden Gardens crowd was preparing for a long evening, the heavens intervened with perfect timing. A ferocious downpour swept across the ground, halting play and washing away Punjab’s advantage as effectively as the match itself. What was shaping up to be a tactical blunder with significant consequences suddenly turned into a wet mess.
The players were forced off as KKR were struggling at 25 for 2 in 3.4 overs. Rahane and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi left to weather the storm – literally and figuratively – against Arshdeep and Bartlett. They never got the chance. Persistent rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind ensured that it would not continue.
The rain eased around 22:30 IST, but the officials were not willing to take the risk of restarting the game in wet and slippery conditions at this early stage of the IPL 2026 season. The match was finally called off at 23:00 IST.
EXPERTS CONFUSED BY RAHANE CALL
Former India spinner R Ashwin, meanwhile, did not mince words and offered a scathing assessment of what he saw as a glaring tactical error in the toss.
“When you know it’s going to be a rain-affected game, with an inexperienced bowling attack at your disposal, you decide to bat first. Interesting thought process,” he told X.
Former KKR wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami also joined.
“Very surprised to see Rahane win the toss and elect to bat first in a scowl. A bit of a shock. You can see the swing and 2 caught behind the back straight away. Very very brave call,” he said.
CAMERON GREEN UNDER PRESSURE
With a win eluding them in their first three matches, questions are starting to swirl around the leadership of Kolkata Knight Riders. Even more remarkable, versatile Cameron Green is coming under increasing scrutiny.
Bought for Rs 25.2 crore, Green was unable to contribute with the ball for KKR due to workload restrictions imposed by Cricket Australia – something that did not please captain Ajinkya Rahane.
Green, reduced to a one-dimensional role, struggled to impress at bat. Scores of 18, 2 and 4 highlight a worrying lack of return and time is running out for the Australian all-rounder to justify his price tag. If the results don’t improve in the coming weeks, he could quickly find himself under even more pressure within the KKR set-up.
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has questioned Green’s role in the team, suggesting he may not be suited to bat at No.3 in a line-up that already lacks middle-order experience.
“I’m not going to talk about money, but I don’t think he’s good enough to bat at No. 3. And he’s not bowling,” Pietersen said.
KKR also looked shaky on Monday as they were missing their spin twins. Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out due to injury while Sunil Narine was unavailable due to illness. In response, the Knight Riders handed debut to senior pacer Navdeep Saini, hoping to use his height and extract help from the overcast evening conditions.
With the rain-enforced break offering them time to regroup, KKR will be keen to adjust their line-up and rethink their strategy ahead of their clash with Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday.
