KKR vs MI: Playoff hopes on the line for Kolkata as Mumbai look to crash party
Kolkata Knight Riders have no room for error in IPL 2026. With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Ajinkya Rahane’s side will need a win against the already eliminated Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday to stay alive in the fight for the final playoff spot.
Defeat would officially end KKR’s campaign for the second consecutive season under Rahane following their eighth-place finish in 2025, a year after winning the title under Shreyas Iyer. Even a win may not guarantee qualification as KKR are also banking on Punjab Kings to slip up against Lucknow Super Giants later this week.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already locked up playoff spots, while LSG and MI are out of contention. Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and KKR remain in the fight for the only remaining spot.
KKR IN A MUST-WIN SPACE
KKR’s qualification equation is simple on paper but complicated in reality. They have to win both their remaining matches and hope that Punjab Kings lose against LSG. Rajasthan Royals currently holds the clearest path among the chasing teams and their big win over LSG, powered by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on Tuesday he put them forward.
A defeat on Wednesday will bring down the curtains on KKR’s chances.
KKR will regret the way their season started. The Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise have won five of their last six games, but the late surge came after a poor start that saw them play catch-up for most of the campaign.
Captain Rahane and coach Abhishek Nayar have taken time to settle on a stable combination, which was acknowledged by overseas signing Cameron Green after KKR’s win over Gujarat Titans.
“I think it took us a while, maybe too long, to figure out the right roles and get the right people in the right positions,” Green said.
KKR have looked more composed since their first win against Rajasthan Royals. Finn Allen rediscovered his touch at the top, including a century and a 35-ball 93 in his final three innings. Angkrish Raghuvanshi continued to impress while Green began to deliver with both bat and ball after arriving at the auction for Rs 25.20 crore.
Vice-captain Rinku Singh has performed his role as finisher consistently, while Sunil Narine remains KKR’s biggest weapon with the ball.
However, injuries remain a concern. Varun Chakravarthy reportedly played against Gujarat Titans despite a hairline fracture in his left leg while Matheesha Pathirana is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the same match.
Rahane’s own form has also come under scrutiny. The KKR skipper has struggled for consistency and the team will hope to do so in the knockout match.
KKR will take confidence from the win over Gujarat Titans and the form of their batting unit, but with qualification now dependent on both results and a clean run scenario, the pressure remains firmly on the home side.
LOOK AT ME TO DERAIL KKRA’S CAMPAIGN
For Mumbai Indians, the match presents an opportunity to finish a miserable season strongly and potentially derail KKR’s playoff hopes. The five-time champions are likely to welcome back captain Hardik Pandya, who has missed the last three matches due to injury but was in full force training on Monday.
Hardik himself has had a difficult season, scoring 146 runs in eight innings at an average of 20.85 and four wickets at an economy rate of close to 12.
MI’s struggles this season have also reflected in the form of several senior Indian players. Suryakumar Yadav scored only 195 runs in 11 innings without a fifty while Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma lacked consistency. Even Jasprit Bumrah often conducted a bowling attack without enough support.
Despite being out of contention, MI still have enough firepower to trouble KKR. Ryan Rickelton, Sherfane Rutherford and Tilak remain dangerous in the batting line-up while a bowling unit with Bumrah, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Corbin Bosch and Allah Ghazanfar can put KKR under pressure.
KKR vs MI: HEAD-TO-HEAD
Few rivalries in the IPL have been as heavily lopsided as the one between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. In the 36 meetings so far, Mumbai have dominated the competition with 25 wins, while KKR have come out on top just 11 times. The Mumbai-based side also extended that advantage earlier in IPL 2026 when they defeated KKR in the tournament opener at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Eden Gardens clash will be played on pitch No. 4, a surface that has featured just once this season during Kolkata Knight Riders’ comfortable chase against Rajasthan Royals. The results in Kolkata have been evenly split so far, with teams batting first winning as many games as they chase. Cloudy weather is also expected during the Wednesday evening race.
KKR vs MI: TEAM NEWS
Matheesha Pathirana is still being monitored by Kolkata Knight Riders after suffering a hamstring problem in his debut appearance for the side. If he fails to recover in time for the match against Mumbai Indians, Blessing Muzarabani is likely to make his way back into the playing XI.
KKR Predicted XI: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (week), Cameron Green, Manish Pandey, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Anukul Roy, Varun Chakravarthy, Saurabh Dubey, Kartik Tyagi, Blessing Muzarabani.
Hardik Pandya is set to make a comeback for Mumbai Indians after missing the last few matches with back spasms, while Suryakumar Yadav is also back in contention after being unavailable in the previous game due to personal reasons. Spinner AM Ghazanfar could come into the mix as another slow bowling option on a spin-friendly surface. Meanwhile, Raj Bawa has been ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up an injury.
MI Predicted XI: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (capt), Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Raghu Sharma, AM Ghazanfar.
