The Madurai District Administration demolished the entrance arch of ‘Periyar Thorana Vaayil’ at KK Nagar on Saturday (July 18, 2026) night as directed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
Police officers, an ambulance with medical personnel, firefighters and other authorities were deployed at the entrance arch around 12:00. perform arch demolition. The section near the arch was closed and the area was restricted to traffic for the safety of people.
Demolition work began around 12:30 p.m. The entrance arch was removed on the directions of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. The court directed the Madurai Corporation and other authorities to remove the entrance arch at KK Nagar as well as other arches that were obstructing free flow of traffic.

The court issued a direction to the authorities while hearing a Public Interest Litigation, which directed the authorities to remove the entrance arches located near the MGR bus stand in Mattuthavani, on Therkuvasal to Airport Road near Villapuram and on Theni Road near Virattipath.
The petition states that vehicular traffic in Madurai has increased manifold in the last 15 years due to the establishment and functioning of markets, bus stands, industrial estates and the High Court. The concrete arch occupied considerable space on the road and caused traffic jams.
Originally built to mark entry points to the city, the arches have outlived their purpose and are now obsolete.
Their presence, especially at high-traffic junctions, created artificial bottlenecks, obstructed vehicular movement and violated road safety norms. Unauthorized parking around these arches has worsened traffic congestion, the petition said.
In February 2025, an earthmoving machine operator was killed after a large portion of the entrance arch of “Nakkeerar Thorana Vaayil” near the MGR bus stand in Mattuthavani fell on a vehicle during demolition.
