King Charles III is scheduled to deliver a rare address to a joint session of the US Congress on Tuesday (April 27) at 3pm ET, marking only the second time a reigning British monarch has addressed US lawmakers.
The only previous instance dates back to 16 May 1991, when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, addressed Congress and emphasized the enduring alliance and shared democratic values between the United Kingdom and the United States.
How rare is the address?
Addresses to a joint session of Congress are reserved for the world’s most prominent leaders. In addition to Queen Elizabeth II. only a handful of world figures, such as Winston Churchill, Pope Francis and Václav Havel, received this honor.
Charles’ speech underscores the importance of US-UK ties even as geopolitical tensions test the relationship.
How long will the speech last?
King Charles’ speech is expected to last 30 to 40 minutes, making it one of the most significant and wide-ranging public remarks of his four-day state visit to the United States.
A number of US dignitaries – including members of Congress, Supreme Court justices and senior military officials – are expected to attend the session on Capitol Hill.
What to expect from the speech
King is expected to focus on the 250-year relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States and track collaboration across science, the economy, innovation and global security.
They are also likely to highlight:
“Special relationship” and shared democratic values
-Historic cooperation during global conflicts
-The importance of unity in the midst of current global instability
The speech comes at a sensitive time as Washington and London are at loggerheads over the ongoing conflict involving Iran and wider tensions in the Middle East.
What happens after the address?
The monarch was welcomed with ceremonial honors and met with members of the American administration. After the speech, King Charles heads to closed-door talks in the Oval Office.
Meanwhile, Melania Trump and Queen Camilla will lead parallel educational sessions with students in the White House Tennis Pavilion.
The address to Congress will be followed in the evening by a lavish state dinner at the White House – one of the highlights of the visit.
The wider itinerary for the four-day trip includes:
– Engagement Ceremony in Washington, DC
-Visit the 9/11 Memorial at One World Trade Center
-Stops in New York and Virginia
-Cultural and diplomatic outreach programs
The visit also marks the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence, adding further symbolic significance to the trip.
A visit amid strained ties
King Charles’ visit comes at a challenging time for US-UK relations, with friction over trade policy, NATO commitments and the Iran conflict.
Tensions between Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have increased, particularly over their differing approaches to the Iran conflict.
But the monarch’s speech is expected to highlight continuity rather than conflict – stressing that the transatlantic partnership remains strong despite political headwinds.
