King Charles dealt another blow to his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The monarch took away several royal honors that the prince still held.
An official UK public record has confirmed that Andrew’s membership of the Order of the Garter has been revoked. His Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victoria Order was also annulled.
This latest move follows a series of actions against the disgraced royal family. Andrew lost his title of “Prince” and was forced to leave his home of Royal Lodge in October. King Charles’ action came after an ongoing backlash over Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.
The removal of Andrew’s remaining titles now includes the prince along with the Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh and His Royal Highness.
According to Buckingham Palace, Charles has launched a formal process to strip Andrew of all his remaining titles and honours. The palace also said Andrew’s long-term lease at the Royal Lodge gave him legal protection to stay there. However, he must move to private accommodation chosen by the monarchy.
“The KING has ordered that the appointment of Andrew Albert Christian Edward MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, dated 23 April 2006, be revoked and annulled and that his name be struck off the register of the said Order,” the formal statement reads.
“These censorships are considered necessary, despite the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him,” Buckingham Palace told Page Six.
“Their Majesties wish to make it clear that their thoughts and deepest sympathies have been and remain with the victims and survivors of all forms of abuse,” the statement added.
Andrew’s downfall
Andrew is expected to leave the Royal Lodge soon. He will move into accommodation on the private estate of Sandringham. Sarah Ferguson has lived in the building since 2008.
She will have to arrange her stay elsewhere herself, because she also came with the title of Duchess of York. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, retain their titles.
Andrew’s downfall began after Virginia Giuffre died by suicide earlier this year. She previously accused him of sexual abuse in a civil case in New York. Although the case eventually ended in an out-of-court settlement, her posthumous memoir sparked renewed scrutiny of Andrew’s activities.
