The Kerala government has given permission to KINFRA to independently raise loans of up to ₹1,000 crore for land acquisition and infrastructure development, Industries Minister P. Rajeeve said.
While laying the foundation stone of KINFRA’s new headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, the minister explained that while the agency used to rely on financial mechanisms like the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the government will now provide a guarantee to facilitate these independent loans. This new financial flexibility will be a priority in land acquisition for industrial projects associated with Vizhinjam port, he said.
Addressing the challenges of industrial expansion, Mr. Rajeeve also noted that while many investors are eager to enter the state, availability of land remains a hurdle. Substantial tracts of land held by central public sector undertakings – such as FACT, HMT and Hindustan Newsprint – are currently lying fallow. Referring to the Palakkad Coach Factory premises in Kanjikode, which was becoming increasingly overgrown, he said such properties would be handed over to the state government for more efficient use.
The minister warned businessmen who acquired KINFRA land but left it undeveloped for years that the government would have to take strong action if the projects did not start quickly. KINFRA’s new headquarters is being built on 22 cents of land in Edappazhinji, marking a significant milestone 33 years after the organization was founded. The event also included an exchange of MoU for the newly completed IT building at Kazhakuttam Film and IT Park. After handing over a 200,000 sq. ft. facility in 2022 to Tata Elxsi, KINFRA has now delivered another 177,000 sq. ft. facility. “plug and play” the company’s campus to meet its expanding operational needs.
