(AP) Carlos Alcaraz revealed at the Monte Carlo Masters press conference on Sunday that he suspended Janika Sinner’s overtaking, because World No. 1 negatively influenced his performance this season, his only title in 2025 came in Rotterdam two months ago.

“Many people ask me or tell me that I have a chance to become number one if Janik doesn’t play. I probably somehow killed me,” Alcaraz said during a press conference.
“I’m not surprised because people always say we have to win tournaments or the best people must be the finals or winning tournaments throughout the playing,” he added.
Monte Carlo Masters refers to the beginning of the clay set season, the surface where Alcaraz had previously excelled, won the French Open last year and Madrid Masters in 2022 and 2023.
Sinner, the current world of number one, received a three -month doping ban in February after he tested twice in March last year. The 23 -year -old Italian is expected to return to Rome in May.
“I just think I can’t become number one … in clay, even if Jannik doesn’t play, I don’t have a chance to do it,” Alcaraz said. “I think I’m too far from Janik. So I’m just here and I realize that I don’t have to think about it and just go there and play there. That’s my thinking right now.”
The four -time Grand Slam champion has to win a match in Monte Carl after being expelled in his debut 2022 and resigned from the last two editions.
After receiving the first round, Alcaraz will face either Francisco Cerundolo or Fabio Fognini in its opening match.
