India Kisan Sabha (AiKs), Kerala, the Farmers’ Wing of the Communist Party of India (CPI), criticized the recently published draft of forest ministry policy to deal with the conflicts of human and wild animals and demand that the government “kill or sell excessive wild animals in the forest”.
AiKs claimed that the forest department tried to give the impression that farmers were responsible for the growing number of wild animal attacks in the state.
“The eucalyptus trees fell”
Mathew Varghese, state vice -president of Aiks, sent a letter to the forest minister Ak Soseendron, who blamed the forest department for growing entry into human dwellings. “Previously, the forests have ensured food and water safety for wild animals. Exotic species such as teak, eucalyptus and wattle inside the forests were planted in forest departments, and wild animals began to post human dwellings,” Mr. Varghese said.
“Excess wild animals in forest areas should be killed, sold or moved from forest regions. The forest department could not prevent attacks on a wild animal and now accuses people for such incidents,” he said.
“The department had previously decided to fall the trees of the Eucalyptus in four acres, but the trees removed only from 1,500 hectares. In the current situation, it will take almost three decades to axes of trees. The forest department should take immediate steps to fall down the trees and end the area into the natural forest,” Varghese.
In his letter, he also demanded that the government should provide compensation of 50 Lakhs and employment for a family member in the event of death caused by wild animal attacks.
“To finance foresight operations, the government should sell an ax and sell old and ripe trees, including sandalwood,” Mr. Varghese said.
