After survival with the help of summer showers, Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is preparing to meet the demand for April and May in the city region Thiruvananthapuram. Everything depends on how rough the rest of the summer appears, KWA officials said.
The Peppar dam, a storage dam for drinking water supply in the city, currently has enough water to last until the end of May, but KWA officials keep their fingers crossed with respect to summer temperatures, its impact on the demand and volume of summer rainfall. “The water level in the Peppar dam is currently at 101.7 meters, which is reasonable for 61-62 days,” said Sooraj Sukumar, Superindive Engineer (PhiCle – Thiruvananthapuram). However, things could be difficult to supply water in the city if summer rainfall is played and temperatures rise.
This year, according to weather forecasts, this year will probably be summer rainfall for normal.
According to KWA officials, the current demand in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Area is approximately 380 million liters a day (billion), which is the volume that will increase in the coming years. Kwa installed small boost pumps in three places in the city, including Udarrasiroman Road and NCC Road, which turns off the Vellayambalam-Vazhuthacaud road, in an effort to solve complaints about water deficiency.
Problems in the city region include places in the Kazhokootam section, KWA officials said. To ensure the supply to such regions and increased zones facing a shortage in the summer months, measures are carried out for valve control, they said.
Despite the growing demand, the capital failed to create a second source of supply other than the river Karaman and the tank in Peppar and Aruvikkar. Although Neyar was designed an alternative source of supply, it did not take place.
A detailed engineering report for the water supply diagram of 120 billion Neyyar noted that the demand for water Thiruvananthapuram City increases every day and that a serious lack of water is observed in summer. “In the dry period, the tide in the caraman river is completely insufficient to satisfy the demand and storage of the Peppar dam is quite insufficient,” reported report 2022.
