Kerala is all set to launch Mission Sushakthi, a major initiative to empower persons with disabilities through community self-help groups. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the program at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday at 3 pm.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Social Justice Minister R. Bindusaid said the mission would create self-help groups across the state on the pattern of Kudumbashree to bring together the physically, mentally and mentally challenged and their caregivers.
“Through Sushakthi, the government wants to more effectively integrate persons with disabilities into society and support them in achieving economic independence, social dignity and cultural participation. The initiative will also accelerate the implementation of welfare programs and development projects aimed at improving the quality of life of the differently-abled community,” she said.
Kerala State Handicapped Persons’ Welfare Corporation will spearhead the implementation of the scheme.
Key focus
The main focus of the mission will be to support the production and marketing of goods produced by self-help groups and individuals who are part of the community. Products will be inspected, labeled and promoted to ensure sustainable income generation.
The mission will also connect members with social welfare programs, poverty alleviation programs and employment oriented rehabilitation initiatives in collaboration with government agencies and local government institutions.
At the basic level, self-help groups of 10 to 20 members with at least 40% disability will be created together with their guardians. The initiative will operate through a three-tiered structure comprising local development societies, district missions and a national governing body chaired by the Minister of Social Justice.
Scheme of Shubhayatra
The launch will also include nationwide distribution of 1,800 side wheel scooters under the Shubhayatra scheme and certificates under the Hastadanam fixed deposit scheme. The Chief Minister will also unveil the official logo of Sushakthi Mission.
Dr. Bindu will preside over the function. Ministers V. Sivankutty and GR Anil along with elected representatives, officials and leaders of organizations working in the field of the disabled will attend the event.
