The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has approved a capital investment plan (CIP) with a total outlay of ₹ 6,478.41 crore for the fiscal 2026-27. This includes expenditure of ₹848.79 crore on power generation, ₹1,175.48 crore on transmission and ₹1,669 crore on the power distribution side.
KSEB has earmarked ₹100 crore for implementation of smart meters, ₹17 crore for preparation of detailed project reports for pumped storage (PSP) projects, ₹170 crore for battery energy storage systems (BESS) and ₹52 crore for EV charging stations. KSEB is looking to PSP and BESS to solve the problem of storing excess renewable energy produced during the day from solar and other sources.
In terms of hydropower generation, the power company has earmarked ₹20 crore for the Maripuzha hydroelectric scheme and ₹10 crore for the Poringalkuthu II small hydropower project. Both these projects are expected to start soon, according to the December 16 order approving the annual plan for 2026-27. In the coming fiscal, KSEB plans to spend ₹ 419.36 crore on ongoing hydro projects.
Renewable energy projects
Further, ₹ 3.60 crore has been earmarked for other renewable energy projects covering solar and wind projects under various schemes.
Projects envisaged with state aid would be implemented only after funds are approved and released by the Kerala government, the order said.
On the transmission side, KSEB will spend ₹ 463.83 crore on routine works related to power transmission. ₹ 598.75 crore has been earmarked for TransGrid 2.0, an ongoing scheme aimed at strengthening the transmission grid in Kerala.
To strengthen the state’s power distribution network, KSEB has earmarked ₹127 crore for the ‘Dyuthi’ scheme.
The KSEB board also approved the revised plan for 2025-26 with an expenditure of ₹4,789.75 crore.
