The final notification for the allocation of registration numbers in the KL-90 series for government vehicles has been issued. According to the gazette notification, the government vehicles will be registered in the KL-90 and KL-90D series. Some numbers will be reserved specifically for ministers, senior government officials, protocol vehicles and other designated persons.
After the D series expires, the letter group and registration code will be followed by the alphabet “D” and a series of numbers.
Vehicles owned by central government agencies, autonomous bodies or institutions controlled by the Union Government will fall under the KL-90A series and subsequently the KL-90E series after the A series expires. The vehicles owned by the territorial self-governing units will be of the KL-90B series, and after its end, the registration code will be the KL 90F series.
Similarly, vehicles owned by quasi-government institutions, autonomous bodies, boards of trustees, corporations and other institutions under state government control and vehicles owned by universities other than deemed universities will be KL-90C series. After the expiration of the current series of numbers in the alphabet C, the registration code will be followed by the series KL 90G.
Buses owned by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will continue to use the KL-15 series. However, public service owned cars and jeeps will carry KL-90 series registration codes. When vehicles owned by the government and government agencies within the KL-15 and KL-90 series are transferred to any other third party not eligible for that series, they should be registered in the relevant series.
No provision
At present, there is no provision for allotment of separate exclusive number plate for vehicles owned by the government and various government departments and institutions under the prevailing rule. In view of several cases of misuse by the ‘Government of Kerala’ Board, violation of the provisions of Rule 92 A of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules, the State Government has decided to introduce a special series of registration plates for vehicles owned by the State and Union Governments and other Government agencies.
Kerala is also yet to implement bharat series (BH series) introduced by the Centre, which allows Union government employees based in the state to use BH series registration across the country. Litigation and confusion in collecting the state’s share of the Union government’s vehicle tax, along with other reasons, have delayed the process of introducing the BH series in Kerala, a senior government official said.
