The Kerala High Court will on Friday (July 10, 2026) take suo motu proceedings in the July 2024 Wayanad landslide that killed over 230 people.
The proceedings were initiated in August 2024 when cases related to mining and construction activities in Wayanad came up for hearing. The Supreme Court then said that the state government should first frame a comprehensive policy of development activities that could be allowed in different areas of the state. It should then examine on a case-by-case basis whether there is a need to grant a licence/permission for any development activity in the particular area concerned or to renew such licence/permission, taking into account the natural nature of the land, availability of natural resources, report of the Biodiversity Committees and the impact any such activity would have on the ecological balance of the region and other environmental factors.
The state government is expected to submit a factual report to the court on Tuesday’s Kalladi debris slide in Wayanad. The court directed the amicus curiae and other parties involved in the suo motu case to be present at the hearing.
