Kerala HC seeks report on compensation awarded to victims and relatives of Mundathikode fireworks blast
The Kerala High Court has sought a report from the state government on the amount of compensation awarded to the bereaved and families of the victims of the Mundathikode fireworks accident that took place on April 21.
A division bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice VM Syama Kumar also directed the government to submit a statement on the steps taken to prevent such accidents.
The government further informed the court that a judicial investigation into the explosion was underway.
Mundathikode in Thrissur witnessed a series of powerful blasts at a makeshift fireworks assembly unit that left 17 dead, over 24 injured and around 50 houses damaged. Fireworks were organized by Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswom Boards before Thrissur Pooram.
The suo motu petition was initiated by the court based on reports and complaints from the public that strict protocols were not followed in the handling of explosives.
The matter will be heard again in four weeks.
