Given that the caravan project, which did not give up as expected, has decided to extend the subsidy for the project for the next year to restore the project. The project proceeds slowly because of the lack of interest of private players.
According to the government order, the subsidy system announced in 2021 to support caravan tourism is only three years of effect, until October 2024. The tourism department has allocated 3.10 Crore to support caravan tourism for fiscal 2025–26. With regard to this, the state changed a clause that limits the payment of the investment subsidy and extended it to 31 December 2025.
Although several caravan parks began to operate in Kerala because the project was marked in 2021, only the one in Malampuzha in Palakkad is currently operating.
According to Sajeev Kurup, General Secretary of the Confederation of Tourism in Keral, which owns Malampuzha’s own device, the absence of caravan park chain confuses the progress of the project. Although his park was opened in February this year, he accepted only a few guests due to the absence of a reserved network of caravan parks.
He says the project was designed after a pandemic focus, which gave tourists the opportunity to dive into the natural beauty of unexplored destinations in Kerala. According to the design of the project, it is still important, but it is necessary to develop a parallel ecosystem suitable for supporting tourism in a caravan, he says.
In the last four years, approximately 20 caravan vehicles have used an investment subsidy. However, only six caravans are actively providing services, while the rest was deployed for services in marital functions, placing the cinema, pilgrimage sites, etc.
Prashanth Vasudev, a former deputy director of tourism, and the main advisor to tourism, North Malabar Tourism organization, says that Kerala with the highest penetration of centers was a favorite destination for campers or caravan tourists.
“When there is enough fun in the centers, especially in internal and outdoor activities, it is a challenging question of how many guests decide to stay inside a caravan or a caravan in a normal picnic place,” he said.
