Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the first phase of the Meppadi Township for the survivors of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides at Elstone Estate in Kalpetta, Wayanad on Sunday (March 1, 2026).
Revenue Minister K. Rajan said in a statement on Saturday that 178 houses would be handed over to the bereaved. Built on a seven-cent lot, each house has a built-up area of 1,000 square feet and a foundation strong enough to support an additional floor. The design includes three bedrooms, an entrance hall, dining room, study, kitchen, utility room and sitting room, with the allocation of houses being done by lottery.
After the completion of the project, Meppadi is developing as an almost self-contained residential town for more than 1,662 people in 410 houses. The plan includes modern roads, electricity, drinking water supply, health center with laboratory, pharmacy and vaccination unit, anganwadi, community centre, public market, children’s park, library and open air theatre. Meppadi town is a statement of continuity, Mr. Rajan said.
