
The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights will host a three-day conclave on child protection laws from February 3 to 5 in the state capital.
The conclave seeks to strengthen the legal and social framework needed to ensure a child-centred environment in the state.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the conclave at the Co-Bank auditorium on February 3. General Education Minister V. Sivankutty will be the chief guest. Minister for Women and Child Development Veena George will preside. Commission Chairman KV Manoj Kumar will be present.
The aim of the event is to review the implementation and challenges of key legislation, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO); Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act; and the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The discussion will also delve into the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), inclusive education and the evolving education policy of Kerala.
Nearly 350 stakeholders are expected to attend, including educators, legal experts, local government representatives and members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Discussions will focus on contemporary topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on teaching methodologies and mental health issues facing children in the digital age. Sessions on civic awareness, constitutional literacy and eradication of child labor and child marriage are also planned.
Lessons on the first day will focus on communication and trust between teachers and parents and legal interventions for children in emergency care and protection and children in conflict with the law.
The second day will specifically focus on child-friendly education, inclusive education, pre-school education and the role of art and sports in overall development.
Discussions on the policy recommendations proposed during the event will be held on the third day of the conclave. Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer will inaugurate the valedictorians at 3.30 pm
