Kerala Chief Minister calls for timely legislation to meet the challenges posed by technology

To meet the challenges posed by technological advancements including artificial intelligence (AI), timely adjustments in legal frameworks are necessary, Chief Minister VD Satheesan said in Kochi on Saturday (September 12, 2026).

He inaugurated a two-day seminar on ‘Music, Cinema and Law: Exploring the Intersections of Art, Culture and Law’ jointly organized by Kerala Judicial Academy and National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS).

The Chief Minister said that with the advancement of technology, there is a growing tendency to copy other people’s creative works and violate copyright.

“At a time when music and visuals are created using artificial intelligence, the threat of digital defamation and deepfakes is also growing. The legal framework needs timely adjustments to meet these challenges,” he said.

Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen said that while art expresses human experience, law aims to regulate and protect it. Supreme Court Judge V. Mohana was the chief guest of the event.

Higher Education Minister Roji M. John, Kerala Academy Board of Governors President Justice Anil K. Narendran, Academy Principal KN Sujith and NUALS Vice-Chancellor GB Reddy were among those who spoke.
