
The state cabinet on Friday approved the Kerala Graphene Policy aimed at promoting the graphene ecosystem in the state. The state government has formulated major projects to utilize graphene technology, which has the potential to revolutionize various industries.
Heralded as the wonder material of the future, graphene and its derivatives have a wide range of applications including electronics, composites, energy storage, water filtration, sensors, packaging and so on. Scientifically known as a key ingredient in improving the mechanical, electrical or other physical properties of composite materials, the carbon form is expected to find emphasis in Kerala apart from textiles, rubber, construction and building materials through a wide range of traditional and emerging industries.
Initiatives
The Kerala Graphene Policy aims to promote research and application of graphene and related materials in the state and ensure support for development and industry. This includes creating sustainable activities, creating a favorable start-up ecosystem, supporting research and development, securing technical support and global partnerships, financial advice and marketing. Government initiatives include the establishment of Graphene Innovation Center and Graphene Production Park to provide infrastructure and support to start-ups and industry players.
