In one of the most closely watched parliamentary election contests, Health Minister Veena George suffered a decisive defeat in Aranmula, losing to Congress debutant Abin Varkey Kodiyatta by a margin of 18,985 votes.
The result, which was the subject of growing speculation even before the campaign gained momentum, marks a significant setback for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the region. Ms George has remained under constant public and political scrutiny ever since she took charge of the Health Ministry in the second Pinarayi Vijayan government.
